Water resistance restoration on dive watch

Water Resistance Restoration

Crown tube replacement, caseback thread cleaning, crystal gasket renewal and dry-pressure verification to the original depth rating. Suited to sports watches that have not been reopened in several seasons.

Written Before Work Begins

Every job carries a written cost breakdown before a single component is touched. No open-ended workshop hours; each line item is stated and agreed upon in advance.

One Watchmaker Throughout

Your piece is handled by one person from intake to handover. There is no handoff between technicians, so the person who opens the movement is the same person who closes it.

Measured Values, Not Impressions

Reports quote the instrument reading — amplitude in degrees, rate in seconds per day, pressure hold in bar. Descriptive terms such as "running well" are not used in place of figures.

Secure Custody

Pieces undergoing long-form work are stored in a monitored safe when not on the bench. Collection by appointment is available for owners who prefer to inspect their piece mid-service.

Parts Provenance Stated

Any replacement component is identified as original manufacturer stock, new old stock, or fabricated in-house. The source is noted in the service record and never left unstated.

Your Report, Your Property

Diagnostic reports are issued to the owner, not held by the workshop. You may take the document to a second opinion or another repairer without any request or delay.

Do I need to commit to a repair before the assessment?
No. The diagnostic assessment produces a written report and a costed plan. You take the document and decide at your own pace. There is no requirement to proceed with any repair work through Mainspring Works.
How long does a standard repair take?
It depends on the scope. A diagnostic assessment takes three to five working days. Water resistance restoration is typically one to two weeks. Long-form calibre documentation and overhaul runs ten to fourteen weeks. Timelines are stated at the outset, not adjusted once work begins.
What happens if spare parts are hard to find?
Parts sourcing is discussed before work starts. Where a component cannot be sourced as original manufacturer stock, the available options — new old stock or in-house fabrication — are presented with their respective costs. You choose, or you decline. Nothing is substituted without your knowledge.
Can I have my piece assessed even if I had it serviced elsewhere recently?
Yes. The diagnostic assessment is written for owners who have received a quote elsewhere and want a second reading. The report documents the current condition with measured values and photographs, regardless of any previous service history.
Is the long-form documentation service only for very expensive watches?
The service is suited to any movement where provenance and condition need to be evidenced — not only high-value pieces. Museum collections, family heirlooms, and auction consignments are all within scope. If you are uncertain whether your piece fits, an intake conversation can establish that.
How is pricing structured?
Each service has a stated starting price. For the diagnostic assessment (RM 470), that is the complete fee. For restoration and overhaul work, the diagnostic report breaks costs into individual line items so you can see exactly what each element contributes to the total before agreeing to proceed.
How do I hand over my piece, and is it insured while in your care?
Pieces are received at the workshop by appointment. An intake script is followed at the counter — you will be asked about the piece's known history, any previous repairs, and the concerns that brought you in. Pieces in long-form service are stored in a monitored safe between bench sessions. For specific insurance queries, please raise them at intake.
